What are binaural beats?
When you hear two tones, one in each ear, that are slightly different in frequency, your brain processes a beat at the difference of the frequencies. This is called a binaural beat.
Here is an example:
Imagine listening to the sound in your left ear with a frequency of 132 Hertz (Hz). In your right ear, listen to the normal frequency of 121 Hz. However, your brain gradually collapses in response to the difference – or 11 Hz. Instead of hearing two different tones, instead hear a tone at 11 Hz (more than two tones assigned to each ear).
Binaural bits are considered hearing impairments. For the binaural beat to work, two tones must have frequencies below 1000 Hz, and the difference between the two tones cannot be more than 30 Hz. Tones should also be heard separately, one for each ear. Binaural beats have been tested in music and are sometimes used to help make musical instruments, such as piano and body parts. More recently, they have been linked to the potential health benefits.
What health benefits are binaural beats claimed to have?
Binaural instruments are said to create the same attitude associated with meditation practice, but much faster. In fact, binaural bits are called:
- • reduce anxiety
- • increase focus and concentration
- • low stress
- • increase rest
- • encourage positive emotions
- • develops intelligence
- • to help manage pain
Meditation is a practice of calming the mind and releasing the amount of random thoughts that go through it. Regular meditation practice has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, reduce brain aging and memory loss, promote emotional health, and increase attention span. Practicing meditation regularly can be very difficult, so people turn to technology for help.
Binaural pulse between 1 and 30 Hz is suspected to create the same pattern of brainwave one might experience during meditation. When you listen to a certain frequency, your brain waves will adjust to that frequency. The idea is that binaural bits can help create the required frequency in your brain to create the same waves that are often seen during meditation. The use of binaural beats in this way is sometimes called brainwave entrainment technology.
How do you Use binaural beats?
All you need to try with binaural beats are binaural beat audio and headphones or earbuds. You can easily find audio binaural audio files online, such as YouTube, or you can buy CDs or download audio files directly to your mp3 player or something else. As mentioned earlier, for a binaural beat to work, two tones must have a frequency of less than 1000 Hz, and the difference between the two tones cannot be more than 30 Hz.
You will need to decide which brainwave fits your favorite situation. Usually:
- • Binaural delta bits (1 to 4 Hz) combined with deep sleep and rest.
- • Binaural pulse at theta (4 to 8 Hz) is associated with REM sleep, reducing anxiety, relaxation, and conditions for meditation and creativity.
- • Binaural pulse at alpha frequency (8 to 13 Hz) is thought to promote relaxation, improve beauty, and reduce anxiety.
- • Binaural pulse in low beta waves (14 to 30 Hz) linked to increased concentration and awareness, problem solving, and improved memory.
Find a comfortable place with no distractions. Just listen to binaural beat audio for at least 30 minutes each day on your headphones to make sure the rhythm is applied (across sync) throughout the brain.
You can try listening to binaural bits to find out what works for you. For example, if you experience a high level of anxiety or depression, you may want to listen to the sound for a full hour or more. Remember, you have to use headphones to play binaural in order to work. You may also want to listen with your eyes closed.
Is there any research to support the claims?
While much research on the effects of binaural stroke has been limited, there is much to prove that this illusion of hearing has health benefits, especially those related to anxiety, emotions and function.
One blinded study of 29 people found that listening to binaural beats in the beta range (16 and 24 Hz) was associated with improved performance in a given task and a decrease in negative emotions compared to listening to theta binaural bits and delta scope ( 1.5 and 4 Hz) or light white noise.
Another controlled study of about 100 people about surgery also found that binaural beats were able to significantly reduce pre-operative anxiety compared to the same sound except for binaural tones and had no noise at all. In the study, anxiety levels were reduced among people who listened to binaural beat audio.
One uncontrolled study asked eight adults to listen to a delta binaural beat CD (1 to 4 Hz) that beats the waves for 60 days straight. Participants completed a pre- and post-60-day survey that asked questions about their feelings and quality of life. The results of the study found that listening to 60-day binaural beats significantly reduced anxiety and increased the quality of life of these participants. Since the study was small, uncontrolled, and relied on patient research to collect data, larger studies would be needed to confirm these results.
One larger and more recent randomized controlled trial Trust Source monitored the use of binaural beats in 291 patients admitted to the emergency department of a hospital. Researchers have observed a significant decrease in anxiety levels in patients exposed to embedded binaural beats compared with those who listen to sound other than binaural beats or do not listen at all (headphones only).
