Do Binaural Beats Have Health Benefits?

What are binaural beats?

When you hear two tones, one in each ear, that are slightly different in frequency, your brain processes a beat at the difference of the frequencies. This is called a binaural beat.

Here is an example:

Imagine listening to the sound in your left ear with a frequency of 132 Hertz (Hz). In your right ear, listen to the normal frequency of 121 Hz. However, your brain gradually collapses in response to the difference – or 11 Hz. Instead of hearing two different tones, instead hear a tone at 11 Hz (more than two tones assigned to each ear).

Binaural bits are considered hearing impairments. For the binaural beat to work, two tones must have frequencies below 1000 Hz, and the difference between the two tones cannot be more than 30 Hz. Is there any research to support the claims?

While much research on the effects of binaural stroke has been limited, there is much to prove that this illusion of hearing has health benefits, especially those related to anxiety, emotions and function.

One blinded study of 29 people found that listening to binaural beats in the beta range (16 and 24 Hz) was associated with improved performance in a given task and a decrease in negative emotions compared to listening to theta binaural bits and delta scope ( 1.5 and 4 Hz) or light white noise.

Another controlled study of about 100 people about surgery also found that binaural beats were able to significantly reduce pre-operative anxiety compared to the same sound except for binaural tones and had no noise at all. In the study, anxiety levels were reduced among people who listened to binaural beat audio.

One uncontrolled study asked eight adults to listen to a delta binaural beat CD (1 to 4 Hz) that beats the waves for 60 days straight. Participants completed a pre- and post-60-day survey that asked questions about their feelings and quality of life. The results of the study found that listening to 60-day binaural beats significantly reduced anxiety and increased the quality of life of these participants. Since the study was small, uncontrolled, and relied on patient research to collect data, larger studies would be needed to confirm these results.

One larger and more recent randomized controlled trial Trust Source monitored the use of binaural beats in 291 patients admitted to the emergency department of a hospital. Researchers have observed a significant decrease in anxiety levels in patients exposed to embedded binaural beats compared with those who listen to sound other than binaural beats or do not listen at all (headphones only).
